Marine Wood Refinishing Guide
Achieve a stunning and long-lasting finish on your mahogany marine woodwork by following this detailed refinishing process. Wood must be free of finish
Step 1: Initial Sanding with a high-speed orbital sander (Such as Bosch ROS20VSC Random Orbital Sander) Always attempt sanding following the wood grain, not across it.
- Begin with 80-grit sandpaper.
- Sand through sun-bleached and weathered layers until you reach the natural mahogany.
- For grooves or detailed areas, tear or cut the sandpaper into manageable sizes, fold into quarters, and sand by hand for precision.
Step 2: Progressive Sanding
- Repeat the sanding process using 120-grit, followed by 150-grit sandpaper.
- Ensure a consistent, smooth surface.
Step 3: Hand Sanding (Rubber Sanding Block)
- Hand block-sand following the wood grain, using 100-grit, then 150-grit paper.
- This helps eliminate any orbital sander marks and ensures a level surface.
Step 4: Surface Preparation
- Ensure you’re working in a well-ventilated area.
- Generously soak all wood surfaces—including undersides—with a high-quality red mahogany or walnut stain. (Or if you want to seal the grain, use a color wood filler)
- Let the stain sit for approximately 15 minutes.
- Wipe off the excess using a clean cloth until no more stain transfers to the cloth.
Step 5: Dry Time
- Allow the stained wood to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
Step 6: Cleaning the Surface
- Wipe down the entire surface with a cloth dampened in mineral spirits to remove any residue.
Step 7: Initial Varnish Coat
- Mix Epifanes High Gloss Varnish and brush thinner at a 50/50 ratio.
- Apply a thin, even coat using a quality brush.
- Allow it to dry for at least 24 hours.
Step 8: Light Sanding
- Lightly hand block sand with 220-320-grit finish sandpaper. Make sure not to sand through to bare wood.
- Carefully wipe away sanding dust using a cloth slightly dampened with mineral spirits, or a clean dry cloth. Tack cloths are also available online.
Step 9: Dust Control
- Reduce dust in the workspace as much as possible.
- Lightly wet the floor to minimize airborne particles.
Step 10: Build Varnish Layers
- Second Coat: Mix at 75% varnish / 25% thinner and apply a slightly heavier coat.
- Repeat sanding and dust removal as done in Steps 8–9.
- Let the varnish flow using even strokes following the grain
- Final Coat: Apply a full-strength coat (100% varnish) for a rich, glass-like finish.
Tips for Success
- Work in a controlled environment to avoid dust or insects settling on fresh varnish.
- Always sand lightly between coats for optimal adhesion and smoothness.
- Patience is key—allow proper drying time between each step.
